PhillyCarShare Members Make a Difference

PhillyCarShare, North America's largest regional car-sharing organization, has signed up its 50,000th member.

The organization has pioneered other low-carbon practices such as implementing the first "free rail to car share" program, partnering with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in offering reimbursable rides to members taking public transportation to car pods; large-scale municipal car-sharing; free memberships; service to drivers aged 18 to 20; and child seats.

Robert Diemer, partner, AKF Engineers in Philadelphia, Pa., is the 50,000th member of PhillyCarShare. Diemer is a dual account holder, maintaining a corporate membership through his company -- approximately 20 drivers -- along with his individual membership.

"In just the past two years, we've seen the membership rise seven-fold," said Clayton Lane, deputy executive director, PhillyCarShare. "Our members have driven 50.6 million fewer miles overall, logged 6.4 million miles in hybrids alone, and saved 2.7 million gallons of gas."

Launched in 2002, PhillyCarShare is a non-profit organization that operates a rapidly growing fleet of "cars by the hour" from 200+ neighborhood locations (pods) in the Philadelphia region. Each member receives a personal key and 24-hour access. Then driving is easy: reserve online, unlock, and go! Rates start at $3.90 per hour or $39 per day and members can get free hours in hybrids and free rides on rail transit.
