Washington Agency Honors Outstanding Wastewater Plants

The Washington state Department of Ecology gave Seattle City Light's Newhalem and Diablo wastewater treatment plants "Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant" awards for 2007.

The award is given to wastewater treatment plants that maintain full compliance with state water quality rules, including effluent limits, monitoring, reporting, spill prevention planning, and pretreatment.

"Ecology appreciates the extraordinary level of effort you and your team demonstrated throughout 2007," wrote Kelly Susewind, the agency's interim water quality program director, in a letter. "The Newhalem and Diablo wastewater treatment plants are run by dedicated operators whose efforts complement one another to ensure outstanding compliance and the protection of our state's water quality."

The state environmental agency reviews 300 plants across the state. The Seattle City Light plants were among 78 facilities to receive the recognition.

This is the third year in a row that the Newhalem plant has earned the award and the ninth time in the 12 years since the agency started the award.
