Kenai, Alaska, Plant Honored for Safety

Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Click Bishop approved Kenai Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award as a result of outstanding employee safety and health programs.

SHARP is a federal recognition program, administered by the Alaska Occupational Safety and Health (AKOSH) Section in the department's Labor Standards and Safety Division. Participating employers are excused from programmed enforcement inspections during the recognition period. In the Kenai Wastewater Treatment Plant's case, the recognition period is three years.

Kenai Wastewater Treatment Plant has been recognized by state labor officials for implementing an outstanding and voluntary job site safety and health program. With the initial SHARP award in 2000, the plant has now been recognized for the fifth time. The company has three employees at this site.

Companies that partner with AKOSH and achieve SHARP status are likely to experience fewer workplace accidents and reduced workers' compensation insurance costs.
