Connecticut Opens 'Native Waters' Exhibit

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in cooperation with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum announced the opening of "Native Waters: Sharing the Source" on Oct. 14 at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum in Mashantucket.

"Native Waters: Sharing the Source" was designed by Project WET in cooperation with the University of Montana as a way to educate people about watersheds and the impacts people have on them, by looking at the cultures that live within them. Displays help explain how watersheds function, the importance they play in cleaning and storing groundwater and the importance to all living systems. The main focus of the exhibit is the tipi arrangement of the learning centers that use stories, artifacts and images to help connect people to water. The exhibit uses the Missouri River Drainage basin to connect the message of water through time, culture and use.

Visitors also will learn about traditions and artifacts of eastern Native Tribes and local watersheds. Additional information may be found on the DEP website at: www.ct.gov/dep.
