Sunita Narain to Speak at WEFTEC.05®

Sunita Narain, the 2005 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate and Director of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in New Delhi, India, is scheduled to speak on Mon. Oct. 31, at WEFTEC.05®.

Narain is a dynamic advocate for water, environment, human rights, democracy, and health. She will discuss her efforts to promote a new paradigm of water management and sustainable development. Topics will include advocating the traditional wisdom of rainwater harvesting and the role of communities in managing their local water systems. She will speak from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Ave., NW, Washington, DC, Ballroom B.

In May 2005, Narain and CSE were awarded the Stockholm Water Prize -- a global award presented annually to an individual, organization, or institution for outstanding water-related activities. Selected for their work to fight powerful, top-down bureaucratic resource control, empower women in water, and rejuvenate traditional forms of water reuse, CSE believes that it is the management of water, and not the scarcity of water, that is the problem in many parts of the world. To that end, Narain and CSE have advocated localized water management as a cost-effective approach to solving water scarcity issues.

This event will follow Narain's keynote presentation during the Opening General Session of WEFTEC.05.
