January is National Radon Action Month
The EPA has assigned January as National Radon Action Month and recommends radon testing to help protect you and your family in your home from the toxic gas.
Testing for radon is the only way to know if the gas exists in your home because radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Radon test kits are available for purchase at hardware stores and online, and cost around $20. The kits include easy instructions and are mailed in for testing results.
“Testing for radon is an easy and important step in protecting the health of your family,” said EPA Mid-Atlantic Region Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “By reducing radon exposure, we can make our homes, schools and communities healthier places to live, learn, work and play.”
Because of the toxicity of the gas, the EPA recommends radon testing for new construction sites, as well as for those purchasing or building a new home.
High levels of radon can lead to serious illness, and radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
