EPA Hosting Black Carbon Symposium Nov. 14
To allow as many people to attend as possible, EPA is holding a satellite event the same day in New York City and also a webinar.
EPA will present a Black Carbon Symposium in San Francisco on Nov. 14, with several experts attending to discuss the environmental and health hazards created by black carbon in diesel exhaust and from other sources. They will share ideas on how to monitor black carbon and how it can be reduced. To allow as many people to attend as possible, EPA is holding a satellite event the same day in New York City and also a webinar. Black carbon contributes to global climate change because it absorbs sunlight and expels heat into the atmosphere. It results from incomplete combustion of organic materials. Most of these emissions are caused by biomass and petroleum fuels, which have negative effects on both the environment and human health, being associated with asthma and other respiratory problems.
During the symposium, attendees will learn about the causes and possible mitigation and control policies. EPA is encouraging policy-makers and state and local air agency officials to attend. Researchers and other professionals with an interest in this topic are also welcome at the events.
