Arkansas Sets Workshops for Auto Salvage Yard Operators

The workshops are designed to assist anyone owning an automotive salvage yard on obtaining all required permits for such operations, complying with applicable environmental measures, and reporting and sampling requirements.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will hold workshops in five cities during April and May to assist automobile salvage yard operators involving compliance with various environmental regulations administered by the agency.

The schedule for the workshops is as follows:

  • April 28, Mike Huckabee Nature Center, 1400 Black Dog Road, Pine Bluff.
  • May 3, Forrest L. Wood Nature Center, 600 East Lawson Road, Jonesboro.
  • May 5, Garland County Courthouse Room 200, 501 Ouachita Avenue, Hot Springs.
  • May 10, ADEQ headquarters building, 5301 Northshore Drive, North Little Rock.
  • May 12, Jones Center for Families Room 135, 922 East Emma Avenue, Springdale.

All workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch. There is no charge for attending, but advance registration is required. Interested parties may pre-register by telephoning 501.682.0820, or e-mailing hopkins@adeq.state.ar.us.

The workshops are designed to assist anyone owning an automotive salvage yard on obtaining all required permits for such operations, complying with applicable environmental measures, and reporting and sampling requirements associated with salvage yards.

Workshop topics will include assistance for completing a stormwater permit application; developing a pollution prevention plan; storing and recycling used automotive fluids; removing mercury switches from vehicles; and storing and disposing of used tires.

ADEQ staff from the water, solid waste, hazardous waste, and public outreach and assistance divisions will attend the workshops to answer questions and make suggestions for proper operation involving salvage facilities.

At least a dozen wrecked cars are lined up behind our back yard fence, by the used car lot which is a quarter mile away,(5 miles south of Cave City, 10 miles north of Batesville). They bring in cars, leave them there for weeks or months, and they are very unsightly wrecks. They have a shed there they may be taking parts off, or working on vehicles. The site is a nuisance, and devalues property of homes nearby. There is a pond nearby, and stream is downhill from the site. Any idea if the place is a licensed junkyard?
