GrafTech Removes 1,600 Pounds of Chemical
The GrafTech International Holdings facility in Clarksburg, W. Va., completed a project to install new pollution control equipment that prevented 1,600 pounds of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and benzo(g,h,i)perylene from being discharged. These chemicals are two of 31 targeted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) program, of which GrafTech is a member.
The modifications employed an absorbent material, petroleum coke fines, to capture petroleum coke from the manufacturing process. Petroleum coke can be used as component in steel production and as a fuel additive.
According to EPA's March 12 press release, GrafTech International Ltd. is actively involved in graphite material science and has more than 120 years experience in the carbon and graphite industry. The company has 11 manufacturing facilities located on four continents serving markets in 70 countries, including electronic, aerospace, and transportation.
