Two Parcels at Marathon in Garyville Designated Ready for Reuse
Two Portions of the Marathon Petroleum Company's Louisiana Refining Division are Ready for Reuse as determined by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A Ready for Reuse determination is an acknowledgment by both agencies that environmental conditions on the property are protective of human health and the environment based on its current and anticipated future use.
The properties encompassed by this Ready for Reuse determination consist of the 4.5-acre Landfarm and the 10.2-acre Land Treatment Unit used for the land treatment of various refinery sludges by Marathon from 1989 to 1998. The properties are located within the Garyville Refinery adjacent to processing and utility facilities. Both units have achieved closure and are currently under post-closure monitoring in accordance with a DEQ Hazardous Waste Post-Closure Permit.
With this determination, DEQ and EPA have concluded that Marathon Petroleum has successfully conducted investigation and risk management activities. The environmental conditions at the properties are protective of human health and the environment based on their current and planned future uses.
"Marathon has demonstrated that a clean environment is important to them. This ceremony is a testament to fine work many people put into cleaning up this land and getting it ready to be put back into commerce," said DEQ Assistant Secretary Lou Buatt. "The Ready for Reuse program is a useful tool to address contamination from these legacy sites."
