Creatures and Conservation

Halloween conjures up images of horror movies, costumes, and things that go bump in the night. However, conservation is surely to become a bigger part of our celebrations during the holiday. It's no trick finding ways to conserve resources, and you find the savings can be a treat. Take some tips from these horror favorites:

Dracula: According to EPA, energy consumed by electrical appliances on standby (or Energy Vampires) "has been estimated to, on average, account for 9 percent of total annual electricity use in American homes, costing nearly $100 for each home per year." So, unplug cell phone charges and microwaves when they are not in use.

The Mummy: Why buy a costume that you'll wear once and throw away? Reuse ones you've worn in previous years, buy some "old rags" from a consignment store, or exchange costumes with friends.

Frankenstein: Just as the monster was made from ahem reusable parts, serve your guests with reusable plates, napkins, and utensils. Disposable party supplies can be costly and a burden on the nation's landfills.

The Werewolf: Instead of serving your partygoers something that has high-fructose corn syrup, let them get a bite out of healthy, seasonal, and locally grown food.

The Zombie: Get some "Brains" and teach your kids how not to litter during Halloween. Take nature walks with them and read some good books together -- all reusable fun.

Now, don't just haunt this blog. Tell us: How are you conserving this Halloween?
