Coral Reef Research Facility Opens in Florida

The new center is the only facility in the country completely dedicated to the ecosystem science of coral reefs.

The new Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research at Nova Southeastern University in Hollywood, Fla. was dedicated Oct. 4 by Dr. Patrick Gallagher, under secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The new research center is the only facility in the country completely dedicated to the ecosystem science of coral reefs.

The ceremony was attended by state and local officials including former Vice President Al Gore, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and Senior Science Advisor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Dr. Paul Sandifer. During the celebration, guests were offered a media tour and a snorkel visit to one of the coral nurseries.

NIST funded the new facility with a $15 million grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which supports the addition of new scientific research facilities across the country.

Do you foresee potential job opportunities being solicited any time soon? I am a geologist/environmental scientist, living in Wyoming (oil and gas country), and after 17 years of environmental consulting work (11 in Memphis, last 6 here in WY), I am just dissolutioned and dissapointed with "environmental" consulting anymore. My passion is sedimentology/stratigraphy and my '95 MS in geology focused on carbonates, ooid shoals, and carbonate depositional systems. I just don't foresee any institution, such as yours, being opened up here in Wyoming. ..... Sincerely, an anthusiastic but lone geologist.

This is great news. In 1975 I was in the Coast Guard in Islamorada, Fl and worked with the John Pennekamp park rangers to protect the reef off Key Largo. I was the first person in the Coast Guard to do this work and saw the need to protect the reefs. I returned to college after my enlistment and am an envoronmental scientist (soon retiring) and am glad to see this work being done.
