Replenishment District Conducts Groundwater 101 Forums

Community members and local leaders packed East Los Angeles’ historic Tamayo’s restaurant for the first, in a series of five, Groundwater 101 Forums, designed by the Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) to educate community members on California’s water challenges.

Assemblymember John Pérez, member of the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, and WRD Board Director Sergio Calderon kicked off the event on Aug. 5 by highlighting the state’s unprecedented challenges to supply water to the region and ways WRD is working to address these challenges.

Director Calderon highlighted WRD’s Water Independence Now (WIN) Program. WIN is a suite of projects that will allow southern Los Angeles County to eliminate the need to purchase expensive imported water from eco-sensitive areas in Northern California and the Colorado River. The program uses various sources of water for groundwater replenishment efforts that include storm water, recycled water and local source water.

“Today’s Groundwater 101 Forum is another outreach effort by WRD to engage our community in water education and water conservation measures,” stated Calderon. “For close to 50 years, WRD has been at the forefront in groundwater management in the region. WRD works hard to find regional solutions that are a ‘WIN’ for everyone,” he concluded.
