Climate Savers, EPA Host Energy-Efficiency Webinars
Climate Savers Computing Initiative and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are leading an educational Webinar for utilities about the environmental benefits, cost savings, and consumer incentives associated with energy-efficient computing.
The how-to forum is scheduled for July 21 and will provide a briefing on IT power management for utility energy-efficiency program managers.
The free summit—a live Web conference—will focus on the benefits of implementing computer power management programs and will engage a discussion around best practices for existing programs in the utilities industry. It will also address specific opportunities for utilities to reduce energy waste, save money, and reduce carbon emissions.
"Utility companies are in a unique position to help lead energy-efficient computing efforts," said Pat Tiernan, executive director of Climate Savers Computing, an international nonprofit organization committed to protecting the climate by reducing IT-related energy consumption.
With the number of PCs expected to more than double in coming years—from more than 1 billion PCs in deployment globally today to 2.25 billion by 2015, according to Forrester Research—it will be increasingly important for utilities to encourage their consumers to use power efficiently so as not to further strain power grids. The goal of this Webinar is to demonstrate how utilities can design and promote incentive programs that will lead to enterprise customer adoption.
"Not only does energy-efficient computing make financial sense," said Tiernan, "it is a simple way for companies to further increase their environmental stewardship." Numerous computer power management solutions already exist, including software tools that companies and consumers may already own. "By utilizing these solutions a typical organization with 1,000 computers would have an annual savings of $40,000, as well as avoid 350 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of removing 60 cars from the road."
